Who is Nikolai Durov?

Nikolai Valeryevich Durov (born November 21, 1980) is Pavel Durov's elder brother, a Russian programmer and entrepreneur. He stands behind Telegram's key technologies: the MTProto encryption protocol, TON blockchain, and the messenger's architecture.

Early Years and Genius

Nikolai started programming at age 12. By 14, he was writing complex programs and competing in informatics olympiads. Unlike his brother, Nikolai preferred working "behind the scenes" — creating technology rather than engaging with the public.

In 2006, at age 14, Nikolai helped his brother Pavel create VKontakte. He was responsible for server architecture and database optimization — key components that allowed VK to scale to millions of users.

Architect of Telegram

When creating Telegram, Nikolai became the platform's chief architect. His key contributions:

• MTProto — encryption protocol developed specifically for Telegram, combining AES-256 symmetric encryption, RSA-2048 asymmetric encryption, and Diffie-Hellman key exchange
• Cloud architecture — system for storing and synchronizing messages across devices
• Performance optimization — Telegram works even on slow internet thanks to efficient data compression

Creating TON Blockchain

In January 2018, Nikolai Durov launched TON (The Open Network) — a third-generation blockchain designed for high throughput and scalability.

• High throughput — theoretically up to 100,000 transactions per second
• Telegram integration — native support via TON Wallet
